Description

Starskii to combat thrips and whitefly

Amblyseius swirskii
Starskii contains the predatory Amblyseius swirskii. This cream-coloured predatory mite prefers the non-mobile stages of whitefly, thrips larvae and spider mites. Besides thrips and whitefly, this mite can also develop on plant foods such as pollen and plant juices and will therefore settle easily in the crop. Swirskii originates from the Mediterranean region, this explains its good functioning in warm and humid climatic conditions.

The appearance of A. swirskii is barely distinguishable to the naked eye from A. cucumeris or A. californicus. The predatory mite has no diapause but is often not active enough in regular winter crops. The optimal development temperature is between 25°C and 28°C and the predatory mite even remains active up to temperatures of 40°C. Under these conditions, its total life cycle will be around five to six days and the females lay an average of two eggs a day. Below 15°C, its reproduction deteriorates sharply. Temperature and light are important for the development of this predatory mite.

Starskii should be used in an early stage of ulcer development. The predatory mite can be used in many different crops, where thrips and whitefly occur. A. swirkskii is mainly found in the top of the crop where the pests are located.

Product characteristics
• Eat both thrips and whitefly
• Predatory mites can be used preventively.
• Can be used in many different crops.
• Available in various formulations.

Quality control
At Royal Brinkman, a team of specialists checks the quality of beneficial insects, mites and nematodes. Based on a protocol, they work to deliver the best quality to the customers.

Packaging
Starskii is supplied per 500 gemini bags (with a minimum of 300 predatory mites per gemini bag). The contents of a culture bag consists of various stages of Cucumeris predatory mites, feed mites and carrier (bran). In the sachets Amblyseius cucumeris is continuously produced. Over a period of four to six weeks, dosed large numbers of predatory mites are released from the small holes in the sachet. The bags are provided with a hanging hook which makes it easy to introduce the predatory mites into the crop.

Starskii is also available as:

  • Mini: small culture bags with a hook.  More sachets with fewer predatory mites provides more expansion points, allowing a better distribution of predatory mites throughout the crop.
  • Gemini: waterproof twin bags. Applicable in crops with watering from above.  Fold the twin bag on the tear - rim (with the printed side outwards) and hang it over a trunk, branch or wire.
  • Stick: small grow bags on a stick. Used in propagation and strawberries on racks. Place the stick in the growing substrate close to the plant.
  • Bugline: a ribbon with culture cells. Used in crops that grow in beds / rows or on plant tables. Place the ribbon horizontally between the crop with the printed side up.
  • Loose material: For a quick introduction of predatory mites. Due to the composition of the carrier, the material can be both scattered and blown.

Instructions for use
Keep product cool until use. Allow the product to cool down to (greenhouse) temperature. Prevent too rapid an increase in temperature, this can lead to a temperature shock for the predatory mites. Open the box with the (twin) bags in the crop. Fold the twin bag and hang it over a trunk, branch or wire with the printed side facing outwards. Hang the bags in a place sheltered from the sun. Avoid contact with heating and CO2 pipes. The degree of use always depends on the pest pressure in the crop, so ask the product specialist for the correct dosage.

Storage and transport
Upon receipt, check the product for discrepancies and report any complaints or comments within 24 hours. Preferably use the product immediately. If storage is required, the product should be stored horizontally and in a dark place in a ventilated room at a temperature of 15-18°C and an air humidity of 70-80% for a maximum of 24 hours. If the product is stored longer and/or under different conditions Royal Brinkman is not liable for any loss of quality.
