Types of aphid

The most common aphid species in greenhouse crops are the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii, the buttercup aphid Aulacorthum solani, the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae and the green peach aphid Myzus persicae. All species of aphids need a different biological aphid control. Some aphids on plants transfer toxic substances to plants, causing an allergic reaction of the plant. Aphids on plants can also transmit some viruses. Aphid control is very important to prevent damage.

Controlling aphids biologically

Aphids on plants can be combated by using natural enemies or aphid predators, such as the parasitic wasp. Biological aphids control is increasingly carried out with natural enemies, because resistance to authorised insecticides increases.

Ichneumon wasp as biological aphid control

The parasitic wasp is most commonly used to control aphids. The parasitic wasps find aphids in the crop even before the aphids can be seen with the naked eye, which makes these parasitic wasps very suitable as a preventive remedy against aphids. Aphids can be found in almost all crops. Aphids cannot arm themselves against these parasitic wasps. It is advisable to regularly use parasitic wasps in the greenhouse.
