Sphaerophoria rueppellii [100 pupae] (AB1)
Description
Sphaerophoria rueppellii to control aphids
Sphaerophoria rueppellii
This product from Agrobío contains pupae of the hoverfly Sphaerophoria rueppellii. The hoverfly looks very much like a wasp due to its distinctive yellow-black body markings. The hoverfly can be distinguished from the wasp by their typical hovering way of flying. They do not sting!
The green larva of this hoverfly can eat up to 200 aphids (different species) per cycle. The cycle of a larva takes about 8 to 9 days at 25°C. The adults feed on pollen and nectar. They can also survive on other prey such as thrips, spider mites and whiteflies. Sphaerophoria rueppellii is active at a temperature of 12 to 40°C, with them performing best between 25 to 35°C.
Note that during autumn, with less daylight, activity may decrease. Adult hoverflies can withstand drought. However, larvae need a humid microclimate to avoid dehydration. The hoverflies are very sensitive to the use of chemicals. No chemicals should be applied at least 6 weeks prior to hoverfly deployment!
Product features
- Effective on a variety of aphid species
- A single larva can consume 200 aphids per cycle
