Description

TRICHOcontrol Trichogramma (spreading) to control caterpillars

Trichogramma achaeae
TRICHOcontrol contains small parasitic wasp pupae (± 0.5 mm) Trichogramma achaeae. Trichogramma achaeae, like other Trichogramma species, is not picky and parasitizes eggs of various butterflies and moths. Trichogramma achaeae can be used in both ornamental and vegetable cultivation.

Caterpillars can be difficult to control pests. Especially in an integrated crop you prefer not to use chemical pest control. This can be at the expense of the build-up of natural enemies and causes possible residue to remain on the cultivated product. With TRICHOcontrol an alternative method to control caterpillars has become available. Trichogramma achaeae controls a range of caterpillar eggs, with a preference for the eggs of Turkish moth and Tuta absoluta. The parasitic wasp occurs naturally in many continents, including Europe. Trichogramma achaeae has no diapause and therefore remains active in the greenhouse during the winter.
The life cycle of Trichogramma achaeae takes about 8 to 10 days at a temperature between 22 and 25°C and a relative humidity between 65 and 85%.  The life cycle of Trichogramma achaeae includes the following stages: egg, three larval stages, pre-pupa, pupa (all take place in the host) and the adult parasitic wasp.

Product Characteristics Trichogramma

  • Particularly suitable for the control of Turkish moth and Tuta absoluta.
  • Good results on Duponchelia.
  • Can be used both preventively and curatively.
  • Can be used all year round due to missing diapause.

At Royal Brinkman a team of specialists checks the quality control of the beneficial insects. They work on the basis of a protocol in order to deliver the best quality to the customers.

Packaging Trichogramma
TRICHOcontrol is available as packaging with 125 balls. Each ball contains 2,200 parasitic wasps.
TRICHOcontrol is also available in cards with 50 dispensers. Each dispenser contains 2,500 parasitic wasps.
TRICHOcontrol is also available as spreading material. This product is supplied as 50,000 pupae or 100,000 pupae in a 500 ml bottle with sawdust as carrier.

Instructions for use Trichogramma

Keep product cool until use. Spread the dispensers evenly over the crop and preferably in the early morning or evening. Hang the cards at half plant height and avoid places with direct sunlight and high temperatures. The distance between the dispensers should be such that the parasitic wasps can control the pest homogeneously. The range of Trichogramma achaeae is +/- 100 m2.
A preventive introduction strategy consists of introducing 10 - 15 parasitic wasps/m2 weekly prior to a period where caterpillars are expected to become an infestation.
A curative release strategy consists of the weekly or 2-weekly introduction of 25-30 parasitic wasps/m2.  The introduction strategy can be adjusted depending on the presence of other natural enemies, especially the predatory bug Macrolophus pygmaeus. Although these predatory bugs also eat parasitized eggs of caterpillars, they prefer non-parasitized eggs.
The release of Trichogramma achaeae can be combined with selective means such as BT's (Xentari, Turex, Dipel), Runner or Nocturn. In general, plant protection products have more influence on the adult parasitic wasps than on the pupal stage (T. achaeae is then protected). Treatments with low-persistence selective chemicals can be carried out without problems up to a few days before the introduction of Trichogramma achaeae.
The degree of application always depends on the pest pressure in the crop (and the number of adult moths/butterflies captured in the pheromone traps), which makes it best to use a certain amount in consultation with a product specialist.
