Description

Feltiline to combat spider mite

Feltiella acarisuga
The larva of the gall midge Feltiella acarisuga is a voracious spider mite fighter. After hatching of the pupae, the adult gall midges mate between the crop, this does not require a spider web. The Feltiella females fly in search of spider mite hot spots and deposit their eggs there. After a few days the yellow-orange larvae hatch and do nothing but eat spider mite eggs and spider mites until they pupate. This pupal stage is clearly recognizable as a white cocoon that usually lies along a grain.

Feltiella is an excellent spider mite fighter. Once this gall midge is present in the greenhouse, spider mites have virtually no chance. Due to the strong search ability of the female gall midges, they often find spider mites earlier than the employees in the greenhouse. The larvae can eat up to five times more spider mites than the well-known Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mite. Because the larvae of Feltiella gall midge are less mobile, the advice is to combine Feltiella with the predatory mite Phytoseiulus to increase the success rate of spider mite control.

In any crop where there is a lot of spider mite, Feltiella acarisuga will be effective. They do no damage to the crop and only eat spider mites. Gall midges are very sensitive to sulphur. It disrupts their search behaviour and development, which has a negative effect on spider mite control.
