Sustainable tomato production at Frövi Greenery

Boosting local food supply in Sweden

Bas van den Bosch - Technical Manager Frövi Greenhouse
Innovation meets sustainability at the Frövi Greenery in Sweden. In this newly built 10-hectare greenhouse, they produce 8,000 tons of fresh tomatoes each year. With an additional 10 hectares under construction, Frövi is setting a new standard for sustainable and efficient tomato cultivation.
Recycling heat and reusing water to cultivate tomatoes
At the Frövi Greenery, Royal Brinkman played an important role creating a highly sustainable greenhouse with partners. We realized the technical installations, with a focus on energy efficiency and water conservation. The greenhouse uses excess heat from a nearby paper factory and sources water from a lake several kilometers away. This helps reduce energy costs and makes the greenhouse highly sustainable. By producing tomatoes locally, Frövi expands Sweden's food supply, which reduces imports and ensures fresher and more sustainable tomatoes for the Swedish market.

"Using the excess heat from the paper factory reduces our energy costs and minimizes our carbon footprint."

Water technology Frövi
Water technology
Our advanced water management system filters the water from the lake through reverse osmosis. The automatic flushing system always keeps fresh water and nutrients available to the plants.
Electrical engineering Frövi
Electrical engineering
We designed and installed an efficient electrical layout with 18 control panels, managing heating, ventilation and lighting systems. The heating system uses excess heat from the nearby paper factory.
Hoogendoorn Frövi
Climate control
We installed Hoogendoorn's advanced IIVO system, controlling everything from temperature to humidity. The system can be managed remotely for optimal growing conditions.
KUBO Frövi
Collaboration with KUBO
In close collaboration with KUBO, we tackled the challenges of this project with a shared focus on quality. Together, we deliverd an innovative, sustainable and future-proof greenhouse.
A modern greenhouse to boost local tomato production
The Frövi project has been a true team effort, collaborating with partners like KUBO, Hoogendoorn, Verkade, PDI, and Anima. “Our proactive approach allowed us to tackle challenges and deliver a modern greenhouse that meets Frövi’s high standards,” says Roy Wubben, Technical Project Manager at Royal Brinkman.

The greenery boosts local tomato production, reduces Sweden’s reliance on imports, and contributes to food security. Additionally, the greenhouse's energy-efficient design, including the recycling of excess heat, ensures that the project remains highly sustainable.
