Efficient water management at Frövi
A fully integrated water system irrigating the 10-hectare tomato greenhouse
At the Frövi Greenery, water technology plays a crucial role in maintaining the optimal growing conditions for sustainable tomato production. The greenhouse brings in water from a lake several kilometers away, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water source. The integrated water system is designed to deliver the right amount of water and nutrients to the tomato plants.
Integrated water system
Commissioned by KUBO, Royal Brinkman developed the fully integrated water system for Frövi’s 10-hectare tomato greenhouse. KUBO designed the concept and system layout. We translated that into a detailed design — always in close coordination with KUBO.
The water for the greenhouse is sourced from a lake a few kilometres away. It’s stored in a water reservoir before being pumped into the system.
Using water from the lake provides a sustainable and reliable source, ensuring a consistent water supply for the greenhouse. The fully integrated water system delivers high-quality water to Frövi's tomato plants, processed efficiently and sustainably.

“We created a complete and closed-loop water system, with features like reverse osmosis, automatic flushing, and water reuse.”

High-capacity water units for optimal irrigation
The system includes pumps that handle 100 cubic meters of water per hour from the basin and a neutralizer of 60 cubic meters per hour for precise pH control. We installed two units, each 10 meters long, which were designed, assembled, and tested in The Netherlands before being transported to Sweden.
These high-capacity units are engineered to deliver consistent water quality, essential for ensuring healthy tomato plants and maximizing productivity across the entire 10-hectare greenhouse.

Pure water through reverse osmosis
Part of the water management system is a large reverse osmosis installation that transforms lake water into high-quality irrigation water.
The installation includes a pre-filtration system that removes larger particles from the water and protects the reverse osmosis membrane. The reverse osmosis process then purifies the water by removing dissolved salts and contaminants, ensuring it is clean and suitable for the plants.
The reverse osmosis installation guarantees a consistent supply of pure and safe water for the tomato plants.

Efficient nutrient delivery with automatic flushing
Next to the water units, we've installed a solid fertilizer system and mixing tanks that provide the tomato plants with essential nutrients.
The irrigation system consists of two dripper systems, including nearly 62 kilometers of drip hoses with almost 100,000 pressure-compensated drippers. The system features an automatic flushing mechanism that ensures the plants always receive fresh water and nutrients, supporting optimal growth. This system enables Frövi to achieve the highest possible yield.

Sustainable water reuse
The water management system at Frövi is designed with sustainability as foundation. The system collects drainage water from the greenhouse, which is pumped into an untreated drain tank. Then, it is fully disinfected with a UV system before being stored in a treated drain tank for reuse in the irrigation units.
By recycling water, the system minimizes waste water and ensures an efficient and sustainable approach. This closed water system is a key element in Frövi's sustainable cultivation process.

“I’m proud we got to carry out this project. It’s unique because it involves two impressive water units that supply the entire 10-hectare greenhouse.”

Sustainable horticulture
Joshua Reijnen explains what makes this project stand out:
“I’m proud of this project because it includes two impressive water units. Each of them can process 125 cubic metres per hour to supply the greenhouse with water. On behalf of KUBO, we created a complete and closed water system, with features like automatic flushing, reverse osmosis, and the reuse of rainwater and wastewater.”
This project is a strong example of how effective water management can support a more sustainable greenhouse. With advanced filtration and water recycling, Frövi ensures a reliable supply of clean water for their tomato plants. A valuable step forward for sustainable, locally focused horticulture in Sweden.
