The importance of food-grade materials for storing cannabis

Cannabis cultivators around the world have developed different protocols for how they process and store cannabis crops. In the absence of official policies or mandates, cultivators have resorted to using a variety of storage containers, including cardboard cartons, plastic tubs from home improvement stores, and plastic bags. The main drawback to these container types is that they are not made from food-grade materials. Why is this important?

What are food-grade materials?

Food-grade materials are those approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe for direct contact with consumable products. These materials are designed not to contaminate the product they come into contact with, ensuring that no harmful substances are absorbed or transferred. In short, food-grade materials maintain the integrity of the stored product without altering or interacting with it in any way.

Why it matters for cannabis storage

Although cannabis is not classified as a food, it is ingested into the human body, making the quality of its storage just as important. Non-food-grade materials can potentially leach harmful chemicals or particles into cannabis, compromising both its quality and the safety of the end consumer. For cultivators, this means that to protect the potency and purity of their products, cannabis should always be stored in containers made from food-grade materials.

Protect quality & potency of cannabis products

Cannabis products, whether stored short-term or long-term, must be kept in conditions that preserve their quality and potency. Food-grade storage solutions prevent contamination and maintain the desired properties of the cannabis, such as its aroma, flavor, and efficacy. Non-food-grade containers, on the other hand, risk affecting these qualities, potentially leading to reduced product effectiveness or even health hazards for consumers.

Common food-grade materials for cannabis storage

Here are three widely used food-grade materials that are ideal for cannabis storage:
  • Polycarbonate: This virtually unbreakable plastic is strong and durable, with a clear colour to offer good visibility, making it a safer and cheaper alternative to glass. Polycarbonate will not absorb odours.
  • Polypropylene: This slightly translucent material is durable and ideal for use in subzero conditions, as it will not crack or break when held at temperatures as low as -40𐩑C. BPA-free.
  • Polyethylene: This material is similar to polypropylene in that it works well in extremely cold temperatures, but the material is an opaque white, offering some protection from light. BPA-free.
