Stronger roots and improved water quality with Moleaer in gerbera cultivation
Since 2018, the Mans family has been running TopLine Gerbera, a modern 3.9-hectare nursery in Tuil, Gelderland. With LED lighting and strong focus on sustainability, the company is leading in innovation. Owner Rino Mans explains the challenges they encountered: “We want to deliver top quality with minimal use of fossil fuels and plant protection products. When we noticed that plants were lost due to poor water quality, we immediately took action.”
The project in brief
What was the challenge?
TopLine Gerbera struggled with an increasing loss rate. This was due to poor water quality, resulting from a lack of oxygen and contamination in the system. Roof irrigation also made the water susceptible to heating in the summer. Rino Mans explains: “In the summer months, our basin water temperature rises to 37 degrees, which significantly increases the risk of disease.”
How did we approach this?
Through a Canadian fellow grower, Rino discovered Moleaer nanobubble technology. “Moleaer had greatly improved his water quality and with it the health of his plants,” Rino indicates. After positive experiences from other fellow growers and looking at alternatives, he contacted his regular contact at Royal Brinkman. After proper consultation with specialist René Mondt, he chose Moleaer. The start-up phase had some technical challenges. These were quickly resolved after installing a new PLC.
What are the results?
Since implementation, TopLine Gerbera has experienced clear benefits. Root health has improved significantly. As a result, the plants absorb water and nutrients more efficiently. “When I compare the roots now to a year ago, I see a world of difference. It's a huge improvement,” Rino shares enthusiastically. This has led to healthier plants, and with that, he sees a significant reduction in plant loss. The system works fully automatically: sensors constantly measure oxygen levels and switch Moleaer on or off when needed. This keeps oxygen levels optimal without manual intervention. “Before implementation, the oxygen level in our water was 8.5 Mg/L. After implementation of Moleaer, it was 24.5 Mg/L. This difference of 16 Mg/L contributes to the overall stability of the cultivation system,” Rino said.
Results
+16 Mg/L
higher oxygen levels
Better and stronger
roots
Low in energy consumption
due to automatic control of oxygen levels
