Truss Support ensures strong trusses at Solyco: “We see less damage to the plants.”
At Solyco in Berkel en Rodenrijs, a total of 17 hectares of tomatoes are grown across three locations. Manager Jack van Schie is responsible for the lighted cultivation of the Macxize variety, a large truss tomato with five fruits per truss. “The first fifteen trusses are set from October onwards. Precisely in that period, truss support is crucial to prevent kinks and keep the plant in balance,” says Jack.

The project in brief

 Strong support for the trusses
✔   Reliable delivery time
What was the challenge?
In tomato cultivation, everything revolves around a strong, well-balanced plant. Especially during the winter period. At Solyco, manager Jack van Schie knows how important it is to properly support truss growth during this phase. For the Macxize variety, known for its early production and high winter yield, reliable truss support is essential.

In previous seasons, Solyco used other truss supports, but these did not always meet expectations. “The old models often came loose during crop handling and were quite sharp. This led to damage to both plants and gloves. On top of that, delivery times were an issue whenever we needed to reorder.”

How did we approach this?
On location, the trusses are always pruned to five fruits. Six employees carry out the support work until about February. After that, the plant becomes strong enough that truss supports are no longer needed. That’s why it’s important to have them delivered on time, right when you need them.

When the current brand of truss supports became less available, owner Gert-Jan started looking for an alternative. He has known Martin Meuldijk from Royal Brinkman for more than 20 years and heard about the Valent Truss Support. These were ordered right away. “The delivery went quickly, and the boxes were sturdy enough to stack well on pallets, which is a logistical advantage.”

What are the results?
The experiences with the truss support are positive. “This support fits firmly and stays in place during work, without us having to keep correcting it,” Jack explains. He also hears good feedback from his employees. “Thanks to the rounded shape, the hands and gloves of our employees are better protected. On top of that, we see less damage to the plants.”

Jack is satisfied with both the product and the service: “We’ve already ordered new ones for next year. Both the delivery and the quality are simply good.”
