How can a boron deficiency be prevented?

Boron (B) contributes to several processes of metabolism. Thereby, it’s the only trace element for which an exact dosage is crucial to the plant. If the dosage is too high, there’s a risk for poisoning the crop. The following question arises: how and when can a deficiency or surplus of boron be seen? And how can it be prevented? The importance of boron

It’s a mix of single fertilizers which are mixed during the production process into an instant fertilizer recipe, packaged in a big bag. The composition of the mix is homogeneous throughout the entire big bag. This prevents the nutrients from coagulating and turning into hard layers, enabling easy pouring of the product into the fertilizing tank.

Causes boron deficiency

  • Bad structure of the soil or substrate
  • Surplus of nitrogen and potassium in the soil or substrate
  • Soil or substrate with a pH level which is too low

Results of a boron deficiency

When the concentration of boron in the plant is low, it does not only affect the firmness of the plant, but also the mechanism which takes in its nutrition. This could result in the crop not taking in all the nutrition needed, leading to a stop of the development of the growth points. 

With a deficiency of boron, there’s a high risk for a shortage of magnesium and nitrogen to emerge. Also, as mentioned above, the plant will have difficulties taking in nutrients, which could lead to deficiencies. It will not solve anything if you add more of these nutrients, since the boron shortage has to be solved first. 

Symptoms boron deficiency

  • Dying points of the roots, edges of the leafs
  • Disfigured young leafs and fruits
  • Older leafs turn yellow

Prevent or solve a boron deficiency

If a boron deficiency in the soil or substrate has to be prevented, it is important to take care of a well-balanced nutritional feeding schedule. In addition, the pH level should be kept in mind. This can be monitored by means of a pH meter. Whenever the pH level is too low, this can be adjusted by adding fertilizers. 
When in the situation of a ‘wrong’ pH level and a shortage of boron, you might think of chelates. However, due to technical reasons, it is not possible to chelate the element boron. Therefore, it is only available in the form of a sulphate. 

Surplus of boron

Unlike a boron deficiency, there’s also a possibility for a surplus, which should be prevented for this element at all times! Boron is the only trace element for which the right dose is crucial for the crop. When the dose is doubled, the crop is poisoned, along with several negative effects. 

Did you remark a stop or slower growth of the plant? Or did you notice a rounding in the crop’s leafs? These are examples of symptoms which can occur when the crop does not have enough boron available. Moreover, the leaf’s ends could turn yellow and eventually die. Therefore, it is important to closely monitor the boron concentration in your crop.
