Pythium Root Rot Treatment

Pythium – also known as root rot – is a plant disease that particularly affects young and soft plant tissue. Through small wound the Pythium disease penetrates the plants. After that, thick-walled spores form. When conditions are favourable, these resting spores can germinate and eventually produce zoospores that spread through water and splash soil. Especially in a humid environment the Pythium disease spreads rapidly.

Identify Pythium

A Pythium infestation is at first visible at the roots. The roots show signs of decay and turn brown-black, that is why this disease is also known as root rot. Subsequently, the entire plant can eventually rot. This causes a reduced plant growth and discolouration of the leaves, because insufficient nutrients can be absorbed. In severe cases the whole plant dies. Pythium can occur in almost every crop.

One of the symptoms of Pythium is that the root bark can easily slide off from the central vascular bundles after infection. In the case of other root fungi this is not the case. So, this is a good way to find out if you are dealing with Pythium. Check soil and water regularly, so that you have time to take measures.

Control and prevent Pythium

Prevention is better than curing. Take timely measures to prevent Pythium:
  • A humid environment ensures the rapid spread of the disease. Prevent this by proper drainage;
  • Always work cleanly and hygienically. Disinfect hands and do not forget to disinfect tools;
  • A good greenhouse climate contributes to optimal plant growth.
  • When you discover Pythium in your crop, remove the affected plants immediately with root rot to prevent spreading.

Pythium Treatment

Pythium can only be controlled with chemical crop protection agents. Please be aware that some pesticides cannot be used in some countries, so Pythium treatment is different from country to country. Always ask your representative for advice. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on the various possibilities for Pythium control.
