ToLCNDV identification

The leaves at the growth point of a zucchini plant, when infected by ToLCNDV, remain small and yellow. In larger leaves, you can see the leaves turn yellow between the veins in a so-called mosaic pattern and you will see the leaves curl up. In zucchini plants, you will note that the fruits develop a rough skin and may split longitudinally. Because the virus has different strains, symptoms will vary for each host plant.

ToLCNDV prevention

ToLCNDV is spread by the silverwing whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and can spread very quickly throughout the crop when the tobacco whitefly is present in the greenhouse. Therefore, tackle the crop change period as the time to thoroughly clean and disinfect the greenhouse. That way, you can completely rid the greenhouse from tobacco whitefly. Also remove all crop residues and all weeds; these may have pupae left in them.

Furthermore, it is very important to implement a thorough workplace hygiene plan immediately after the crop change to prevent the tobacco whitefly from entering the greenhouse. Ensure effective hygiene measures when entering the area and establish a clear hygiene protocol for visitors.

Also, right from the start of cultivation, make use of traps. To identify the tobacco whitefly, it is best to use yellow sticky strips and/or pads. Timely detection of this pest is important so you can start fighting it as soon as possible.

Apart from being transmitted by the tobacco whitefly, ToLCNDV can also be spread by various types of weeds, in particular the nightshade species of weeds. Therefore, be alert to the presence of any weeds and remove them as soon as possible.

ToLCNDV treatment

The Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus is a quarantine organism. This means that the Netherlands is obliged to prevent the spread and establishment of the virus in the EU. If you suspect that one or more plants in your crop have been infected by ToLCNDV, you must notify the NVWA immediately.
