The correct tomato hooks, twine and clips for my crop

Fruit damage, broken stems or drooping crops: these are all risks incurred from using the wrong hooks, twine or truss supports in your tomato crops. You naturally want to prevent these risks. One type of tomato will benefit from growing on a thin twine, others from a thicker variety. Specific plant weight is the determining factor here.

Tomatoes with a low plant-weight

This category includes snack- and cherry tomatoes. Because their weight is relatively low:
  • A 3 mm steel thickness hook is strong enough.
  • There is no need to take twine thickness into account. All types of twine are suitable for snack- and cherry tomatoes. Your choice is based on the quantity of twine you need: 1/1500, 1/1200 or 1/1000.
  • A 21S clip or a bio version thereof, is strong enough to support the plant. This clip is suitable for the lighter tomato varieties.

Tomatoes of medium weight

This category includes all of the medium truss and loose tomatoes. For instance, tomato varieties such as Roterno Proudesse Extension, Forticia and Cappricia. For these tomatoes:
  • A hook with a steel thickness of 3 millimeters is strong enough to keep the crop upright.
  • The use of 1/1200 or 1/1000 twine is recommended. A 1/1500 twine is excluded because this twine is simply too fine for the weight it will need to carry. This leaves a risk for the twine to break.
  • The 23 mm Easy clip is suitable for attaching tomato plants of medium average weight.

Tomatoes of heavy weight

Middelgrove and grove tomatoes are plants of heavy weights. Tomato varieties such as the Merlice, Marinice and Climbo belong to this category. Due to their heavy plant weights, it is wise to work with:
  • Hooks with a steel thickness of 3.3 millimeters. This prevents the hook from buckling.
  • Twine of 1/1200 and 1/1000 that is strong enough.
  • The 23 mm Easy clip. This clip has extra-large and strong twine clamps that allow heavy plant loads to be tolerated.

Tomatoes with extra heavy plant weight

This category includes varieties such as Xandor, Maxcize, Sevance and Radiance. For these, the use of the correct steel thickness hooks and type of twine is crucial to prevent the risk of the hooks buckling and breaking of the twine. To be able to support these heavy tomato varieties:
  • You need hooks with a steel thickness of 3.3 millimeters.
  • The thickest type of twine of 1/1000 is required.
  • The 23 mm Easy clip is adequate but if truss weights exceed a kilogram per truss, a 26 mm Easy clip will be needed. Both clips are also available as a bio version.

Truss support clips suited for all tomato varieties

When a tomato truss grows to maturity, its total weight is so high that the stem of the tomato vine tends to fracture. To prevent the stem from breaking, truss support arches are used. Various truss brackets are available. The flexible truss bracket is flexible enough to be suitable for use in all tomato varieties regardless of their weight.
