What is Precision Growing?

Precision Growing is a way of growing developed by substrate manufacturer Grodan and applied by growers worldwide more and more. Precision Growing is all about a sustainable way of growing that takes care of humans and the environment. Three factors are crucial here: genetics, greenhouse climate and root environment. Grodan helps the growers develop a healthy root environment with their slabs.

Selecting the right substrate slab

A good and healthy root environment is important for creating an end-product of the highest quality. The right slab is an important factor for realizing a healthy root environment. It might even be a crucial factor: everything that happens inside the slab has consequences for the root environment. Every crop has its own needs, and therefore it depends on the crop as to which type of slab leads to the best results. For that reason it is very important to select the most suitable slab for your crop at the start of the cultivation. The better the slab fits the requirements of your crop, the less you have to correct and compensate to create a healthy and strong root environment. You can make use of your resources more efficiently, which makes Precision Growing sustainable.
In this video, we show you how to connect a Grodan GroSens sensor.

Precision Growing with the GroSens

Developing of the root environment takes place in the slab. To get the best control over the root environment you need to know what happens in the slab. You can do this by using the GroSens. This device measures the Water Content (WC), the Electrical Conductivity (EC) and the temperature inside the slab. You can read the measurements in the E-Gro app, and can steer the crop where needed. Important to know is: the more data you get from your crop, the earlier you can steer / (re)act, the more sustainable you can grow. For that reason the GroSens is a very important device when you make use of Precision Growing.

How do I install new substrate mats?
The number of drainage holes and the position of these holes have a major impact on the crop. This is because these are in part decisive for the water flow in the substrate, the re-saturation capacity and the displacement of old nutrient solutions. In many cases, a new crop cycle start with a new substrate.
