Tips for working safely with a robocar

Working safely with a robocar
Written by Michael Visser | Last update: 12-06-2019

The Robocar is a fully automatic electric tractor for internal transport of all kinds of trolleys and harvesting trolleys that can be used both manually and automatically. In automatic mode, the Robocar navigates its way using an induction wire laid in the floor. This results in labor savings, but this does require a safe way of working. In this article, our specialist lists the points for attention for working safely with a Robocar.

Safety precautions before use

  • Before using a Robocar, always read the user manual and follow the instructions and safety guidelines. A Robocar may only be operated by persons of at least 18 years of age who have received thorough instruction and have taken note of the user manual, fully understand it and are aware of the dangers.
  • All personnel in the working area of the Robocar should be familiar with the safety rules and safety features of the Robocar. The employer must ensure that personnel are made aware of these safety provisions.
  • Use this Robocar only for the purpose for which it was intended and designed. The Robocar may only be used indoors, driving on flat concrete floors that are stiff enough to drive on and stop safely. Never use the Robocar outside or on public roads.
  • The Robocar must not be switched on if the protection or covers have been removed/opened. Before switching on the Robocar, all protection and covers must be fitted and closed again.
  • Remove the charging plug before using the Robocar.

Safety precautions during use

  • Never exceed the maximum towing capacity of the Robocar.
  • It is not permitted to stand on the Robocar when driving or when stationary.
  • It is forbidden to use the Robocar in insufficiently lit area’s!
  • Pulling or pushing objects other than the transport trolleys intended for harvested products with the Robocar is prohibited.
  • When the key is in the lock, you should never leave the Robocar unattended.
  • Never run a Robocar near intersections, junctions and doors in the induction path. The Robocar might not register the route control correctly, which can lead to collisions and other calamities.
  • Make sure that the Robocar is placed in the correct direction of travel on the induction track when driving automatic.
  • Do not approach a moving Robocar, always wait until the Robocar has come to a complete stop before attaching or uncoupling transport vehicles.
  • Make sure the Robocar is free from obstacles whilst driving.
  • Always keep hands, feet and legs within the frame of the Robocar to avoid the risk of accidents.
  • Be extra careful when driving at higher speeds manually, take into account a longer braking distance and moderate the speed when cornering. Drive slowly if the situation is congested.
  • Take extra care when driving in reverse, always reverse slowly!
  • Keep sufficient distance away from fixed and/or moving parts of the greenhouse construction and the processing area.
  • When working with the Robocar, wearing shoes with protective caps (minimum safety category S1) is mandatory.

  • After use, the Robocar must always be turned off with the key switch and the lock by turning it to the horizontal position.

Safety measures during maintenance

  • Work referring to assembly, installation, adjustment, maintenance and repair should only be carried out by skilled, qualified personnel.
  • Before performing maintenance, inspections or repairs, always turn the Robocar off with the lock and remove the key from the Robocar.
  • After maintenance and repair, always check that no tools or loose parts are left in or on the Robocar.
