Saving energy: 6 ways how you can do it

In order to save costs in horticulture, it is important to use energy as efficiently as possible. Which form of energy saving suits your company, depends on the type of cultivation, type of greenhouse and the current form of energy generation. Our specialist Martin Meuldijk has listed all the solutions for you in this article.

Use of shading screens and agents

They can be found in every greenhouse, shading screens and agents. With a shading screen you retain heat in your greenhouse. Even during cold days and nights, without the help of a boiler or CHP system. However, you have to keep in mind the loss of growing light and the additional effects on the crop.

Read more about the functions of shading screens in horticulture.

A shading screen keeps the energy radiation out so that the temperature in the greenhouse does not rise too much. With the combination of the two products you can create an optimal greenhouse climate and thus save energy.

Isolate with film

During the winter months, it is important to use isolating films for warm crops. The films allow the heat to stay inside, reducing the need for heating. An additional advantage is that films can be attached quickly and are not a big investment. There are two types of films with an insulating effect:

1. Isolating film for the facade
Is daylight important? Then choose an extra-clear facade film that lets in more light. If the incidence of light is not important, then choose a natural facade film.

2. Anti-Condensation film (AC film)
A feature of AC-film is that the condensation spreads across the entire surface. As a result, it allows more light to come through and you save on energy costs. Read more about AC-film in the customer story of grower Seasun.

Create an even climate with DryGair

With high humidity in the greenhouse, moisture is often deposited by a minimum tube and open windows. By opening windows you lose a lot of heat and CO2. A good solution is to use a DryGair unit. DryGair extracts moisture from the air and condenses through cold panels in the unit. This keeps the heat in your greenhouse and you can keep your screens and windows closed. Read more about how to save gas with DryGair.

Use solar energy

You can also save energy by installing solar panels. Did you know that you can install solar panels on the company's roof without a permit? Although the investment is large, it provides immediate savings on monthly energy costs. The electricity from the solar panels is immediately available in the company. Do you have insufficient space on the roof but a large basin? Then you can also use floating solar panels that are anchored to the ground.

Maintain your heating system

A simple way to save energy is to perform regular maintenance on your heating system. This is because when using a boiler, the quality of the make-up water is not always of good quality. This results in poor heat transfer in the heating system and therefore lower energy efficiency. If you monitor this annually, you can save up to 10% in energy. Read more about how you can save energy with your heating system.

Paint your heating pipes

Painting your heating pipes is a cheap and easy way to save energy. White painted heating pipes reflect up to 50% more light and release up to 20% more heat. This allows you to turn down the heating. However, you need to repaint the pipes annually due to temperature changes, humidity and wear and tear. Want to know how to do this? Check out the tips on painting heating pipes.
