Tips for working safely at height

Working at height involves major risks. In fact: falling is number one in the top ten most common work accidents. That is why it is important to take the right safety measures when working at height. Horticulture also involved work at (great) height, such as cleaning and repair work on the greenhouse roof, but also when performing work on pipe rail trolleys. That is why our specialist lists the important points for working at height for you.

Working on the greenhouse roof

The greatest danger when working on the greenhouse roof - to clean it, for instance - is that safety provisions such as railings and fencing are usually missing. This increases the risk of falling. With grave consequences, because if you fall on the greenhouse roof, there is a major chance to fall through the glass and into the greenhouse. That is why it is very important to wear fall protection. This breaks the fall and prevents you from hitting the ground.

To prevent the risk of falling as much as possible, it is also important to always use the service rail on the greenhouse roof when performing work there. If this is not possible, then use a gutter roller. Always work in sufficient daylight or ensure there is sufficient lighting and never work on the greenhouse roof with wind force six or higher.

Work is also done at height in the greenhouse, such as work performed with the help of a pipe rail trolley. Make sure you always carefully read the safety instructions beforehand and check the machine for things like tilt.

Scaffolding is also sometimes used in a greenhouse, such as for repair work. Before entering the scaffolding, always make sure the brakes on the wheels are engaged so that it cannot move.

Fall protection

With work carried out at 2.5 meters above the ground or higher, it is necessary to wear fall protection under to the Working Conditions Act. A safety harness is always the best option here. This harness – which may be attached to the roof or scaffolding via a lifeline – absorbs as much of the force of the blow as possible, meaning the body is protected as much as possible in the event of an impact. It is very important that the safety harness is worn and set in the correct way here.

How to act after a fall

If someone falls, it is important to know how to act. If someone is wearing a safety harness and is suspended in the air after a fall, it is important to get them down as quickly as possible. Even though a safety harness distributes the pressure on the body, it is not comfortable and can pinch considerably.

Note: when helping the victim, also observe your own safety and take safety precautions where necessary. After all, you cannot (properly) help the victim if you get hurt!

Having the fall protection checked

To make working at height as safe as possible, it is important to have the fall protection checked by a certified company every year. Have the material checked after a fall; most lifelines no longer meet the safety standards after a fall.
