Protect the crop against burning applying a reflective substance (chalk)

As many crops are not able to withstand full sunlight, it is wise to provide the greenhouse deck with a chalk layer or diffuse coating in the spring already. Chalk and diffuse coatings are used for reflection as well as for the spreading of light. A chalk reflects both light and warmth. A diffuse coating keeps the warmth outside and distributes the incoming light across the entire greenhouse for an even and optimal greenhouse climate.

Good water management

A shortage of rain water frequently occurs during summer. In order to timely respond to that, good water management is essential. Therefore ensure additional water sources and be aware of the influence of the different water sources on the nutrients and fertilizer scheme of the crop. It is advisable to compose a scenario scheme even before summer, so direct action can be taken when there is a shortage of water. Our specialists can help you compose a scenario scheme.

Extra check water supply system

During the summer months you ask most of the water supply systems. Therefore, it important to carry out additional checks before any peak moment can arise. Check for example if there are leakages, if the pumps are functioning properly and whether a filter needs cleaning or replacement.

Plant resistance

In times of drought, we sometimes experience problems. A shortage of water. When this happens, alternatives for your normal source of water have to be sought, which is something to prevent. However, this cannot be prevented at any time. Therefore, it is important to create a resistant crop. In order to improve the soil life and thus the plant's resistance, several plant resistant products can be used. Products such as seaweed, SilicaPower, mycorrhiza moulds and rhizo bacteria. These products could offer some help in dry times, in order to minimalize the risk of drought stress for the crop.

Protecting bumblebees against overheating

During summer, the temperatures in the greenhouse are often high, increasing the risk of bumblebees in the crop get overheated. This has an adverse effect in the pollination and the death of bumblebees. So ensure that you protect bumblebees against the heat by, for example, placing bumblebee boxes in the shade.

Adjust the irrigation scheme for the crop

In the summer period plants are most active and fit in the morning hours. For that reason it is sensible to adjust the water scheme to it, so that the crop is sprayed and irrigated in the early morning.

Cover water tank and basin

When the temperatures rise, the heating and irradiation of the water by the sun creates algae growth. Therefore, place an anti-algae cloth or anti-algae floating tarp over/into the basin or the water tank to stop the growth of algae.

Maintenance of the heating system

You are probably wondering why you should have maintenance carried out during the summer - when you are not using the heating system. Actually, this makes quite a lot of sense. You're not dependent on your heating system during the summer months, because then the machine stops.  By carrying out maintenance during the summer, you ensure that the heating system works properly for the colder seasons. Make use of these tips for the maintenance of the heating system.

Spray crop protection products in the evening

Crop protection products that you apply to the crop need some time to penetrate the crop properly. The better the pesticide absorbs, the more effective the pesticide will be. However, the sun ensures that the pesticide can dry out too quickly, so that the pesticide loses its effectiveness. Make sure that you spray with crop protection agents in the evening. In addition, this is often more convenient because of the re-entry time of certain pesticides.
