What is “Next Generation Growing”?

Next Generation Growing (The New Cultivation) is a new cultivation method with two goals: to improve plant growth by perfecting greenhouse conditions and to minimize cultivation costs by reducing energy and heat consumption. New insights for greenhouse climate control and a change in grower behavior lead to optimal cultivation results in a (semi) closed greenhouse. The focus is on controlling temperature, humidity, CO2 dosage, light and shade. In this article you can read more about Next Generation Growing (NGG).

The four principles of Next Generation Growing

The behavior of the plant is the starting point of the cultivation strategy for Next Generation Growing. Four factors play a role in this:

Climate Equality

Climate uniformity in the greenhouse is the most important factor of NGG. The uniformity of the climate allows plants to grow and produce evenly. In doing so, it is more efficient to control the crop as a whole instead of treating problematic spots individually. In this way, the homogeneous environment provides better conditions for the crop and reduces costs and effort. Creating climate equality can be done with various tools, including fans and diffused light.

Air movement

Climatic conditions in general have a huge effect on the transport of nutrients by plants. Air movement is essential in stimulating water uptake and subsequently necessary nutrients like calcium, which enable growth. To compensate for the lack of air movement under closed screens, NGG requires artificial air flow, using fans or air circulation equipment.

Insulation

Modern greenhouses are better insulated, allowing operators to close their thermal screens for extended periods. This drastically reduces the heating required. Colder head temperatures lead to reduced or even complete cessation of transpiration. Which in turn reduces nutrient uptake, inhibiting plant growth. In addition, colder temperatures mean higher relative humidity, which increases the risk of condensation and disease outbreak.

Dehumidification

Humidity can lead to disease, suboptimal plant growth and excessive energy consumption. To improve greenhouse humidity, humidity data must be collected and analyzed. There are three main methods of determining humidity: relative humidity, absolute humidity and humidity deficit. Previously, humidity was controlled by heating and ventilation. Both very inefficient. Effective humidity control, using dedicated dehumidifiers, such as DryGair, achieves three goals:
  1. Reduced risk of fungal diseases because condensation can be avoided;
  2. Increased nutrient uptake and photosynthesis because the plant's stomata are stimulated;
  3. Reduced need for heating and ventilation.

Basic principles of Next Generation Growing

The basic principles of Next Generation Growing can be found in the handbook of “LTO Glaskracht Nederland”. This includes information about the effects of next generation growing on plants, which processes take place in the greenhouse and what interaction takes place between the crop and the greenhouse. Specific situations and the future perspective are also discussed and a step-by-step plan for Next Generation Growing has been included.

Solutions for Next Generation Growing

Next Generation Growing is aiming to make as much progress as possible with the help of new insights and behavioral changes. Certain solutions can support various factors within Next Generation Growing. Think of fans, dehumidification systems and shading solutions.
