How did you end up in Mexico?

"Since 2010, Mexican companies have had more opportunities to purchase horticultural technology locally. Suppliers from other countries needed to maintain local inventories to fulfill their customers' needs in Mexico, making it crucial to have a local presence. In 2013, I decided to move to Mexico for what was supposed to be three years. Now, over a decade later, there's no end date in sight. Both my professional and personal life have flourished here. I now have two children with my Mexican wife, and Royal Brinkman has experienced significant growth and development."

What milestones have been achieved?

"After several years of laying the groundwork, we started seeing results. Royal Brinkman Mexico began a decade ago in a small attic space with just myself. Over time, we moved to a 300 square meter location, and by 2019, expanded to 1000 square meters. The importance of local inventory grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting us to acquire the adjacent building. Now, with thirteen employees, we operate from a spacious 2200 square meter facility for storage and offices. Sales continue to be a major focus of my role, alongside handling various operational and administrative tasks. It's crucial to implement the right strategies, especially as Mexico's horticultural market presents significant growth opportunities, and Royal Brinkman is committed to expanding alongside it."

What should entrepreneurs in Mexico consider?

"Patience is crucial. Mexicans have seen many foreigners come and go. Therefore, trust must be earned by demonstrating commitment. Once they see you're here to stay, Mexicans will truly embrace you as one of their own. We've become integral to the market here over time. Additionally, it's important to go with the flow. There's a lot of bureaucracy, but it's best not to resist it. It's highly recommended to collaborate with lawyers and accountants familiar with the local market to avoid legal and tax pitfalls when starting a business. Fortunately, there are many Dutch nationals in Mexico City willing to assist fellow countrymen with guidance and support."
