How to maintain the filters of the watering system

Regular maintenance on the filters of the watering system is important for the preservation. The crop rotation is a good time for this, as you won’t be using the watering system for a short period of time, but also because this often takes place after the summertime. In the summertime a lot more is required from the watering system, which makes maintenance extra important. In this article, our specialist explains how to carry out maintenance on the filters of the watering system.

Sand filters

Sand filters are backwashed preferably under pressure rather than on time. In case of a pressure loss of 0.5 bar over the sand filter, after all you need to backwash. This backwashing is preferably done using clean water and should last between 3 and 5 minutes – which is all the time that is required. You can check if the dirt has been washed out of the filter by placing a piece of transparent tube into the bleed line. If the water running through the tube is clean, you know that the dirt has been washed away. Also manually check at least once a year, whether no hard top layer has formed on the sand and whether the sand still also breaks up in single grains. If this is not the case, then the filter sand should be replaced.

Automatic filters

Also automatic filters require regular maintenance. How often this should be done, depends on the use intensity, but make sure that you check the inside at least a few times per year. Doing this, pay attention to the condition of the rubber sealings and check the sieve. Also follow the instructions in the included filter manual.
