10 tips for the conservation of a water tank

The risk of damage as a result of bursting or overflowing of a steel corrugated plates water tanks – as often used in glass horticulture – is gradually increasing. Especially the consequential damage has significantly increased over the last few years. This is because the lay-out of companies has become more complex constituting an increase of interests. The bursting or overflowing of water tank is a great damage risk for your company. Causes of bursting of a water tank could be misalignment, corrosion or leakage of the water tank. Overflowing of a water tank could arise when the overflow of the silo has insufficient drainage capacity, or when the feed pump doesn’t stop filling the silo in time as a consequence of a defect. That is why we provide 10 tips to prevent damage to or by a water tank.

Tips for silo maintenance

  1. Check if the moving and floating parts in the silo still function adequately, at least twice per year.
  2. Check the silo at least twice per year, on corrosion on the outside, misalignment and leakage. White marks may indicate a crooked wall and a porous spot may be a sign of leakage. Applying a coating to the wall will improve protection against corrosion.
  3. Use a tarp to protect the silo against extreme weather conditions. During frost, check if there is any ice formation in the silo. If the silo contains a layer of ice, do not drain any more water.
  4. Check the silo film for shrinkage. Especially the film of a silo is sensitive for varying water levels. If the film no longer follows the shape of the corrugated plates, this indicates shrinkage, which may lead to tearing.
  5. Reduce the tension of the film, in case of shrinkage, by giving it less length on the outside.
  6. Are you going to replace the film? Then also reserve sufficient time for an inspection on corrosion at the inside of the silo wall. Replace any plates affected by corrosion.
  7. When replacing the silo film, also remove the sludge that has accumulated below the old film. If wet sludge remains, a biogas may be created, which could eventually lead to wear and leakage of the film.
  8. Replace the film of a silo only at an ambient temperature of at least 10°C.
  9. When replacing with the silo film, also replace the protection blanket.
  10. Any water tank that is over seven years old, should be inspected every two years from the seventh year. Emptying the silo is not required. The inspection can be performed by Royal Brinkman. Click here for more information or to make an appointment now.
During a silo inspection, the wall thickness of the silo is measured to check whether there are any weak spots in the wall. Prior to inspection, we always ask about the plate thickness, as delivered by the supplier.
