Heating as water purification technology

Water purification is an important condition for a good cultivation. Water may contain bacteria, viruses, fungi and other micro-organisms, that cause contamination of the crop. One of the methods for the purification of water in glass horticulture, is heating. In this article our specialists provide more information about the use of heating for water purification.

Functioning of heating

The heating of drain water is an ancient and reliable water purification method. During heating it is all about the correct combination of temperature and contact time. In most cases a temperature of 95°C is applied, during 30 seconds, but sometimes the water can also be heated up to 85°C for 180 seconds. In the latter case the boiler could be used and there is no need for an additional heat source. The heating of the water ensures the micro-organisms present to be killed.

Heat exchanger

In many cases a heat exchanger is used to quickly heat up the water and then cool it again, so the water can be used directly. In order to prevent the heat exchanger from becoming polluted, it is recommended to first filter the water before it goes into the purification system, for example by use of sand or paper band filter.
