Tips for optimal use of greenhouse sunlight

Light ensures that photosynthesis takes place in a plant. Therefore, in most cases, a grower wants to get as much light as possible in his greenhouse. This can be done by using assimilation and LED lighting, but a cheaper way is to make optimal use of sunlight. In this article, our shading agent specialist shares his tips for optimal use of sunlight.

Cleaning your greenhouse roof top from the outside

The easiest way to get more sunlight into the greenhouse is to make sure that the greenhouse roof is clean. Over time, glass of the greenhouse becomes increasingly dirty and roots will grow into the gutters. This blocks a (large) part of the sunlight. By regularly cleaning your greenhouse, you could prevent this light loss. Using a greenhouse roof washer Top Cleaner you are able to safely and easily clean your greenhouse roof.

However, the inside of your greenhouse can also be polluted by rust, dust, algae and other types of pollution. With a glass cleaner you can remove this dirt. This can be done manually, but also with an AquaJet to clean the inside of your greenhouse. An AquaJet Cleaner rides over the pipe rail system and contains a spray mast to distribute the detergent. The facades of the greenhouse can also be cleaned with a spray gun. With a high pressuren you can rinse the greenhouse glass.

Diffuse coating

Another way to make more use of sunlight is to apply a diffuse coating on top of your greenhouse. A diffuse coating creates diffuse light which is a light that is scattered. In this way, there is a better light distribution which stimulute photosynthesis of the plant. The light penetrates deeper into the crop, allowing the plant to absorb more CO2 and then processing it into more stable growth, production and quality.
The video above explains how difusing light works.

Remove shading agents and diffuse coatings on time

In spring and summer, growers want to protect their crops from too much irradiation and high temperatures, because this could cause crop damage. To do this, growers use shading paint and/or the above mentioned diffuse coatings. However, as soon it becomes fall, we advise to remove these shading agents and/or diffuse coatings as soon as possible from the greenhouse so that the sunlight can do its job again. So, Do not wait too long for this so you can take optimal advantage of all sun light available in fall and winter time.

What is a shading agent?
Many crops are not resistant to full solarization or high temperatures. In this case a shading agent could offer protection. When applying a layer of shading agent that reflects light and reduced heat peaks in climate in the summer could be avoid and crops will be protected.
