Limit emissions

In 2027, Dutch greenhouse horticulture must be growing almost completely without emissions. This requires insight into the water flows and conscious use of water on the farm. There are currently various options for improving the water system and reducing emissions of crop protection agents, nitrogen and phosphorus. We have listed the options for limiting water emissions in this article.

  • If you have a rainwater basin outside and your company is located near the coast, covering this basin is a good option. This ensures that the EC of the rainwater does not rise.
  • Make sure there is adequate rainwater collection for the dry periods. This means you do not have to use other water sources that contain more sodium (such as surface water or tap water).
  • You can collect and reuse condensation water.
  • You can cover gutters to prevent dirt from entering the drainage system.
  • Let drain water run over a cloth filter (this prevents clogging of the submersible pump in the drain collecting tray).
  • Connect a pH control to the drain tank to neutralize bicarbonate.
  • Disinfect the water with disinfectants and / or Huwa-San.

Quality additives

  • Map the composition and purity of products (crop protection agents, fertilizers and disinfectants) that you add to the water.
  • Preferably use low sodium fertilizers.
  • Controlled-release fertilizers ensure that emissions are limited, because the release of these fertilizers coincides with the fertilizer requirement of the crop.

Reduce wastewater

  • Make sure buffer silos are properly sized.
  • Install level signals in the wastewater silos and collection pits to prevent overflows.
  • Find and resolve leakage flows within your company. You can also choose to perform a “Business Scan Water Flow”.

Monitoring

  • Use reliable liter counters.
  • Use water analysis for more insight.

Watering strategy

  • Provide good controllable pre-regulation, this ensures that you can optimize reuse.
  • Control the EC according to the needs of the crop.
  • Control the watering according to the needs of the crop.
  • Ensure optimal water distribution in the substrate and on the crop by using AquaGro L. This ensures that the small amount of water you give ends up in the right place. An ideal water / air ratio is also achieved, which benefits the root development of the plant.

The benefit of cultivation without emissions

Horticulturalists currently must comply with the water purification obligation, but there is an exception for growers who can demonstrate that they are growing without emissions and that they do not discharge drain water. If you can demonstrate this, the treatment obligation no longer applies. You can have a Quick Scan performed for this.
