Soil predatory mite as a natural enemy

Soil predatory mite is a natural enemy of for example thrips, fungus gnats and springtail. The best-known types are the Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Hypoaspis miles), the Gaelolaelaps aculeifer and the Macrocheles robustulus. As the name suggests, it lives in the soil. The prey of the soil predatory mite, as such, mainly consists of soil insects.

The soil predatory mite can be recognized by its rather big, brown body and legs. The feminine mites are larger and have an additional white stripe on the most rear part of their body. This mite is active at temperatures from 10 to 32°C, but the optimal living conditions for this natural enemy are temperatures between 22 and 25°C.
  • Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Hypoaspis miles): can be used against the larvae of the fungus gnats, the pupated thrips larvae and eggs of the moth duponchelia. As this mite has a lot of different soil organisms on its menu, they can survive in almost any cultivation.
  • Gaelolaelaps aculeifer: works as a natural enemy against Californian thrips and tobacco thrips. Can also be used against mealybug and fungus gnats.
  • Macrocheles robustulus: this soil predatory mite contributes to the control of the eggs, larvae and pupas of the fungus gnats, thrips pupas, the spring tail larvae and duponchelia.
