Pepper twine's features and its stretchability

An average of five kilograms: this is the amount of strain that pepper twine needs to be able to endure. This becomes a challenge because the slightest amount of stretch can cause fruit damage along with all of the resulting consequences.

Pepper twine and its stretchability

Twine is the most important cultivation related item for pepper growers. Pepper plants need the stability provided by twine to grow properly. Considering weights of 5 to 6 kg (and outliers up to eight kilos), pepper twine is under much strain. For optimal growth of peppers, it is crucial to use twine with as little stretch as possible. This ensures that plants can stay as straight as possible.
Risks related to too much stretch in pepper twine:
  • Plants start to drop during the season. This leads to less light and thus, less (size and/or quality) peppers.
  • Because plants start to droop, you will have less room to move. This causes potential damage to the fruits from harvesters and crop managers rubbing against them.
  • Damage to peppers means loss of quality. This ultimately results in reduced harvest yields.

Pepper Twine from Valent

Several brands of pepper twine are available on the market; one of these is Valent Pepper Twine. This type of twine was developed in 2019 in collaboration with experienced pepper growers. Since 2020, it has been for sale globally.

When Valent Pepper Twine is attached well to the crop wires and to the plant, a pepper plant should stay as taught as a guitar string throughout the growing season; regardless of weather influences. In warm periods it can be up to 45 degrees at the top of greenhouses. This heat normally causes twine to soften slightly, to weaken, and therefore to stretch. Valent Pepper Twine has been developed in such a way that high temperatures will not affect the stretch factor in this twine.

“The rows are kept straight and tightly arranged from start to finish. This works well and prevents damage and loss of quality.” (Pepper grower Rob Moors)

Using pepper twine in a twine machine

In addition to using strong and soft pepper twine, you also want pepper twine to be installed in the greenhouse as soon as possible. A twine machine can offer a solution here. A twine machine allows you to quickly and easily cut the twine to size. This type of device is suspended from the pipe rail trolley. Up to 2000 twigs per hour roll out of a twine machine. You can tie this directly to the crop wire and the crop. Assuming that pepper cultivation requires you to hang 70,000 twines per one hectare, this provides a considerable advantage in terms of time. It takes approximately 46 hours to equip one hectare of land with pepper twine with a twine machine. Without a twine machine, this would take weeks.

Whitepaper: Save labor with our Valent line
Hooks, clips and twines are essential for your cultivation. It supports your plants from the beginning of the crop rotation. You only want the highest quality of material for your crop. Use the Valent line to eliminate the risk of breakage, to ensure that young plants grow in height and to save labor. In this whitepaper you will find the differences between the Valent Hooks, advantages of the Valent Clip and a lot more.
Twisting versus clipping | The differences
Twisting and clipping are two techniques that are being used in cultivation to ensure that young plants grow in height. The choice between these techniques depends on several factors. It’s also possible to combine the two techniques.

Hygiene protocol for pepper
Hygiene is a very important issue in horticulture: with the help of various hygiene measures, we must prevent bacteria, fungi and viruses from entering the company or staying behind during the crop rotation.
